Comfort rating key

Easy half-day Return trip with plenty of time to explore comfortably. Suits any departure time. Full day Requires a morning start (7โ€“9am). You will use most of the day travelling and visiting. Very long day Requires an early start (6โ€“8am). Expect to be tired โ€” but doable. Consider a tour. Overnight recommended Travel time is high relative to visit time. An overnight stay makes much better use of the journey.

What is the best day trip from Athens?

The best day trip from Athens depends on your interests. For ancient history lovers, Delphi is the gold standard โ€” two to three hours away, with the most atmospheric ancient site in Greece. For a quick escape, Cape Sounion at sunset is hard to beat: 75 minutes from central Athens and one of the most photographed classical ruins in the world. For island hopping, Aegina is only 40 minutes by ferry and makes an easy half-day outing.

Day trips that need an early start

Delphi requires leaving Athens by 7โ€“8am to make the most of your visit before the midday heat. Nafplio with Mycenae and Epidaurus needs at least 7am to see all three comfortably. Meteora, even by the fastest train, requires a very early departure and means a 14โ€“16 hour day โ€” for most travellers, an overnight in Kalambaka is far more rewarding.

Day trips you can do without a car

Most Athens day trips are feasible without a car: KTEL buses connect Athens to Delphi (from Liosion terminal), Nafplio (from Kifissos terminal), Corinth and Marathon. Ferries run regularly to Aegina and Hydra from Piraeus. Cape Sounion has frequent KTEL buses from Pedion Areos park. For Meteora, the overnight Intercity train from Larissa Station is the most comfortable option without a car. Organised tours are often the easiest choice for sites like Mycenae, Epidaurus and Delphi, as they include transport, entry and a guide.

Tips for day trips from Athens

  • Book guided tours 48โ€“72 hours in advance in peak season (Juneโ€“August) โ€” popular departures fill quickly.
  • For ferry day trips (Aegina, Hydra), buy tickets at Piraeus port or via ferry apps โ€” no advance booking required for most sailings.
  • Carry cash for KTEL bus tickets, small site cafes and rural tavernas โ€” cards are not always accepted outside Athens.
  • Bring a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water for any outdoor archaeological site.
  • Check KTEL bus schedules before you go โ€” some return buses are limited to one or two per day.
