How much does Athens cost in 2026?

Athens remains one of the more affordable major European capitals. A budget solo traveller staying in a hostel, eating souvlaki and gyros, and keeping paid attractions to a minimum can get by on €65–80 per day. A couple sharing a mid-range hotel room, eating at proper tavernas and doing a couple of paid experiences each day will typically spend €250–350 total per day (€125–175 per person). A comfort-focused traveller in a boutique hotel with Acropolis views will spend €300–450 per day.

Accommodation costs in Athens

Hostels in the Monastiraki, Psyrri and Plaka neighbourhoods start at €18–25 per person in a dorm. Private rooms in budget guesthouses begin at €40–55. Mid-range hotels and apartments in the centre cost €80–120 per night. Rooftop boutique hotels with Acropolis views range from €150 to €350+. Prices peak in July–August and around Easter. Book well in advance for the best rates in peak season.

Food and drink in Athens

Athens has excellent budget eating options. A souvlaki or gyros from a street counter costs €2.50–4. A proper lunch or early dinner at a neighbourhood taverna runs €12–18 per person with wine. The Central Market (Varvakeios Agora) area has cheap and filling options. Mid-range restaurants in Monastiraki and Koukaki charge €20–35 per person for dinner. Rooftop restaurants with Acropolis views are typically €50–80+ per person.

Getting around Athens

The Athens metro is clean, fast and cheap — a single ticket costs €1.40 (90 minutes, includes transfers between metro, bus and tram). A 24-hour travel pass is €4.50 and covers all public transport. Bolt and regular taxis are affordable for occasional journeys — expect €6–12 for most central trips. The airport express metro (Line 3) costs €10.50 one-way or €18 return. Most major sights in central Athens are within easy walking distance of each other.
